At this time there are no fewer that 129 varieties of British Shorthair Cats

At this time, the British Shorthair cat is available in 6 recognized [in Great Britain] self colors, plus white, in its 3 eye-color forms. ... The coors are white, black, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, and cream. It should be an even colour down to the roots.

There must be no evidence of tabby markings or any white hairs (other than in the self white).

In each variety, other than in the blue-eyed white, the eye color is orange, copper or gold.

Self-colours are always difficult to breed to a high-quality level of consistency.

From British Shorthair Cat by F M Rowley
Lilac is one of the self-colors and can be described as a pale rose-beige / frosty gray with a pinkish hue.

Nose leather and paw pads of the lilac British Shorthairs cat must be pinkish gray.

Genetically, the lilac color is a dilution of chocolate. The colors cinnamon, fawn, and caramel while dilution of chocolate also, are virtually unseen in the North American cat fancy

Letters from home

August 13, 2007 - an update from Ann on Reilly:
" I picked up Reilly from the Duluth airport. He arrived safely (was a little frightened). He is checking out the house right now and all of his new toys.

He is beautiful and so friendly - he has already purred for me. Right now he is walking around on my desk... I gave him a little of the ground meat (very lean ground bison) and he really liked it.

He is a very very sweet little cat and very pretty. If I go downstairs, he calls for me. He feels safe upstairs right now, so that is where I will be spending my time this evening. You are right, I love him already!"
August 16, 2007 - more updates from Ann:
" Little Reilly is doing great. We have definitely bonded to each other. I have been very attentive to his every need, and he follows me everywhere in the house. At first he only wanted to stay upstairs, but now he likes running up and down the stairs and has checked out all the rooms and furniture downstairs.

We play several games, he gets into everything (cupboards, drawers, every small space he can fit into). He wants to see what I am doing at all times. I don't think he likes it when I use the computer because he walks all over the keyboard and usually tries to get me to stop what I am doing and play with him.

When I am at work, I keep him in my bedroom with his litter box, food, toys, and carrying case. I have a radio playing softly with classical music and the ceiling fan on. I put a cedar chest under the window and with blankets and a down pillow, the window is open only about an inch for fresh air. He likes to watch the birds in the bird bath. I come home for lunch and feed him and play with him for about 20 minutes. He is usually napping or looking out the window when I get home.

He sleeps all night next to me and waits for me to wake up before he starts playing with me. I can't believe what a sweet little kitten he is, and I can't wait to get home to see him. I can see what you mean when you said how gentle and loving he is. He is a great little guy! --Ann"
Karon and David's updates on Ella and Maggie:
"Well the kittens are growing up fast.
Yesterday was their first excursion to the great outdoors (the fenced in patio). Toby was gracious enough to share his domain with them for a while, but I think that he might begrudge losing his last sanctuary if they spend too much time out there.

Maggie and Ella are getting bigger every day. As you may be able to see from the pictures Ella is taller and longer than Maggie right now. Ella is very elegant and beautiful. Her fur is shiny and sleek. She almost looks like she has Siamese in her. Maggie is our little "Raga Muffin". She is bolder by nature and very curious. She and Toby are good pals. Maggie is the first one to greet us and has a big appetite.

They are both really fun to watch when they get wrestling and running around the house. It's cute except at 3:00 AM when they do it in bed with us. Haven't had full nights sleep since they've been able to get up on the bed. July 30, 2007 "
