What’s In A Name?
Boreal Says It All
Not that long ago, there was an idea to open a cattery.  Not just any cattery.  But one that would breed the finest of British Shorthairs.  One that would make T.S. Eliot proud to include its cats in his poems.

That vision of a cattery progressed.  Build it and they will come was the hope.  Build it they did, and cat lovers did come because it was built better, with more thought, more love, and more care.

The kittens this cattery bred would eat nothing but the purest in kitten food.  Their treats would include carefully diced chicken and fish, and raw steak and even puréed beef hearts. And those kittens would grow up so very healthy.

And though that love and affection would limit the size and profit potential so often sacrificed when companies become large, so be it.  This cattery would feature a hand-raised style that delivered cats with full socialization where they craved the attention of people that would love and care for it.

And cat lovers throughout North America would eventually recognize this difference in breeder philosophy by the awards its cats received at national shows.

But what would be a good name for such a cattery – one that would be located in Toronto, Canada – a world-class city with cold winters but incredible summers?

There was an idea!  Make the name as different as the business philosophy itself.  Make that name reflect the very nature of that cattery’s vision.  Call it Boreal Cattery.

Why the name Boreal?  Let’s see how the dictionary defines the word: “boreal describes a region that has a northern temperature climate with cold winters and warm summers.”  The name would certainly fit Toronto.  But there was much, much more to this choice.  Boreal symbolized more that weather; it reflected a philosophic duality that was the very foundation of the cattery.

No matter how cold the exterior of the cattery might become, the cats inside Boreal Cattery would feel nothing but the warmth of the owners’ love and attention.  Like the yin and the yang, or the wave and the particle, or the sweet and the sour, Boreal Cattery was a name that fit – cold on the outside and warmth on the inside.

We think Boreal Cattery delivers on the vision of its original design.  Look through this website and you can see and feel the difference.  Read the testimonials.  These are letters from new friends, and not just past customers.  These are the feelings of an extended family bound together by cats and kittens who have shared the lives of people who care for them.

We think Boreal Cattery is a fine name for a cattery that is so very different.  We hope that you one day will join our extended family with a cat or kitten we have raised for you to love.

Rhoda - Hermione and Samuel's beautiful daughter

My story all started with my Mom, Hermione from Kelcobber Cattery in Upstate New York coming over to Toronto Canada for a romantic encounter with Boreal Cattery's Samuel. Sammy as he is known didn't waste any time and fell in love with Mom immediately. Her gorgeous plush coat, enchanting voice and bedroom eyes were all it took.

I was born a little while later in Toronto on April 24, 2007 at Boreal Cattery. Guy and Natalie were there to help me take my first breath and provide a helping hand delivering my brothers. I was destined to live in New York state at Kelcobber attery.

Somehow a twist of faith turned things around for me. I was to return to Canada and become a Queen at Boreal Cattery. I love being a Mom, little cuddly babies all around really make me happy. I also enjoy chasing a paper ball around the house or just chill with the other girls here at Boreal Cattery.

I will be going to the occasional cat show when the opportunity arises and look forward to meet you. Life is a wonderful thing, be happy, enjoy the world around you and keep love in your heart for it is the only thing that matters.
